For October I am watching Horror or Spooky films. Some are favorites and some I will be watching for the first time. I tre volti della paura or Black Sabbath for American audiences is easily one of my all-time favorite Horror movies or movies, period. Three different stories combine with an interstitial with Boris Karloff to make a cohesive and complete picture. Mario Bava started as a painter and then a cinematographer well before he became a director and with a primary focus on stunning visuals he shows his bias toward the beautiful and painterly. The middle sequence “The Wurdulak” is the most dramatic and most heart-breaking. Karloff plays the titular character a type of Vampire who preys specifically on family members. “The Telephone” is good maybe a little too tricky while “Drop of Water” is the most simplistic of the sequences a cautionary tale that greed will lead to madness and death. If only that were true. If only.
Until next time.
